Continuing Education & Clinical Training
Each year, Fellowship Hall offers continuing education classes for counselors held in-person on our campus inside the Alumni Outpatient Center located at 5142 Dunstan Road, Greensboro, NC 27405. Sessions run from 1:00pm to 5:00pm. To receive full credit, participants must attend the entire session.
Fellowship Hall is approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP No. 6839) and the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board (NCSAPPB) to provide credits for continuing education classes.

Training Fees
$60 per class or purchase all 8 by December 31, 2023 and save $50
Students and recent graduates (within the last year) may be eligible for a 50% discount. Simply email your current class schedule or your school’s name, graduation date, and your program of study to training@fellowshiphall.com to request the discount code.
- Registration Fees are non-refundable but may be transferred to another individual for the same session with 24 hours advance notice.
- Reservations will not be rolled over between sessions.

- Each class has been granted credit hours by the NCSAPPB and/or the NBCC
- You must attend the entire training class to receive credit. If you arrive late, leave early, or are not present for any portion of training, a certificate will not be issued
- Lost certificates will not be re-issued

REGISTRATION CLOSED….March 21, 2024: The Trauma of Incarceration & the Impact of SUD Treatment

Of the current populations currently incarcerated in jails and/or prisons, there is a high incidence of individuals with past trauma histories. Felitti et al have found that this can be attributed to higher rates of substance use disorders and mental illnesses in this population. People with histories of incarceration can be referred to different outpatient and inpatient SUD treatment facilities and present with unique triggers and symptoms that are important to address while they begin the re-adjustment to society. By looking at the legal origins of the increased criminalization of substances (the war on drugs, drug schedules), from the unique gender differences to the different psychological conditions that can arise from incarceration (post-incarceration syndrome, PTSD, anxiety, depression), this training will examine how individuals can experience trauma from a substance-related incarceration, how those different symptoms may be present and how they can be treated in SUD treatment.

Professionals in the human service field are often faced with ethical dilemmas. When challenged by such events the professional is expected to think critically and make decisions in the best interest of the client in accordance with the agencies policy and procedures. In addition, it is expected as a professional that one’s professional conduct reflects that which has been outlined in the code of ethics determined by the governing body and/or professional practice board they are accountable to. Sadly, countless professionals have been disciplined as a result of ethical complaints. An even greater number of persons have found that their thriving career has quickly came to an end after having been found in violation of an ethical guideline. Staff training, professional development and regular clinical supervision serve as effective tools of accountability and interventions to preserve the longevity & protect the professional from the risk of ethical dilemmas.

May 16, 2024: Families, the Underutilized Recovery Support Resource

Suppose we accept that substance use disorder is a chronic brain disease that overtakes the decision-making of the brain. Why, as providers, do we believe that our clients can make rational and effective decisions about their treatment path? One of the more underutilized resources to support early intervention and treatment decision-making is the family. While there is evidence that the family suffers a parallel trauma response to their loved one’s substance use disorder, they remain highly motivated to support treatment. This workshop will focus on strategies that empower the client and family during the early intervention and treatment process when treatment refusal is at its highest. Many times, family engagement is an afterthought, but family involvement can have a profound effect on the retention of clients in treatment while supporting the family’s recovery process.

June 20, 2024: Using EMDR with Substance Using Clients

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is one of the most popular modalities for treating trauma, but how effective is this modality with people who have Substance Use Disorders? This training with cover the epidemics of trauma, adverse childhood experiences and substance use, the synergy they create, and how they complicate treatment. We will learn about the basics of EMDR which will include how and when to use this modality with people experiencing Substance Use Disorder. We will also review the DSM-V definition of Substance Use Disorders and Trauma Stressor Related Disorders and their intersection to better understand the complexity that our clients bring to treatment. We also learn about the broader application of EMDR for the treatment of other mental health disorders.

September 19, 2024: Sexual Health Risk Reduction Counseling – Expanding Skills to Address HIV/STI/BBP

Do you feel at a loss for assisting your clients with reducing their risk for bloodborne pathogens and sexually transmitted infections? Do you feel awkward talking about these issues with your clients? In this training, you will learn a Motivational Interviewing based process for discussing sexual health risk with your clients. You will learn how substance use counseling and sexual health counseling fit together to assist clients with reducing their overall risk. You will learn how sexual health counseling can fit into assessments and interventions for substance use disorders. This training will also offer instruction and practice on skills that you will be able to use to assist your clients with reducing their risk.

October 17, 2024: Grief & Burnout

This training is intended to offer an overview on defining grief then moving that understanding to looking at specific losses related to those suffering with a SUD. We will then review several models of the grief process and explore how these models can assist clinicians with helping their clients begin to address their unresolved grief issues in a recovery process. The second part of the training is intended to help clinicians begin to identify their own unresolved grief issues, many as a result of working with a traumatized client population. We will identify the symptoms and impact of unresolved grief on caregivers and identify effective, and necessary, methods of discharging this grief in order to avoid burnout.

November 21, 2024: Beyond Being “Nice” and Person-Centered…Strategic Use of Motivational Interviewing in Treatment

Certified MINT Trainer, Laurie Conaty, MSW, LCSW, LCAS, will take learners beyond asking open questions, being nice and respectful and accepting ambivalence in this training! While the previously mentioned skills and spirit are important, this training will highlight the dynamic, intentional, and strategic use of Motivational Interviewing skills to powerfully develop and evoke patient change talk. MI, practiced skillfully, is far beyond being nice, respectful, and patient-centered.
