Referrals Are an Essential Part of Treatment

In the field of addiction recovery, we encounter many new and challenging circumstances. After all, each of our patients carries a unique and often complicated story with them. As a result, many patients and families are concerned and even distraught when they hear that a referral has been made to continue appropriate care. After all, the choice of rehab facility may have been made with much consideration and discussion. Fellowship Hall receives referrals from other facilities and we refer out on a regular basis – it is an integral part of effective treatment.

Medical treatment for conditions related to addiction and addictive behavior, violent tendencies and cultural considerations make up the most common reasons for an external referral. For example:

  • Injected drug users have a higher risk of infections such as Hepatitis C and HIV. If these or other conditions exist, the patient may need specialized care in a medical facility or hospital until they are stabilized and ready to receive appropriate therapy
  • Patients with violent tendencies may be referred to an appropriate facility that is experienced in such matters
  • Those with eating disorders, especially anorexia, may have to be re-nourished under the supervision of a specialized ICU
  • There may be detox facilities that do not have a treatment component or treatment facilities without an aftercare program that will refer their patients to a facility such as Fellowship Hall to receive care
  • Cultural considerations must be made to ensure proper treatment – this can include language barriers or specific traditions or norms

Oftentimes, barriers to care can be minimized or eliminated through proper referral. And top-tier facilities will do what they can to ensure that the receiving facility adheres to the highest of standards. Ultimately, we, like other addiction counselors and facilities have a duty to our patients. This duty means that we must provide them the very best care, which sometimes means referring them to another facility.

Remember that you, as a patient or an involved family member, are an integral part of the treatment plan. Any questions you may have about treatment in general and referrals in particular can and should be directed to our clinical staff. Understanding the reasons and reasoning behind the referral can offer some clarity and peace of mind going forward.
